Bonneville continues his project of serial shows about the lives and works of artists and thinkers whose importance have been vital to his artistic journey.
In his new work he considers Alan Turing as a starting point – mathematician, crypto annalist and first-generation computer scientist. Turing is best known for having helped decipher the codes of the German machine Enigma during the WWII, preventing the war from extending further in time.
He influenced the development of computer science and the formalization of the algorithm concept, with Turing’s machine playing an important part in the making of the modern computer. He was also a pioneer in the artificial intelligence proposal.
The Importance of Being Alan Turing comprehends an obsessive look on the body and, in particular, the way Western culture has provided material for gesture, expression, identification and fantasy, as bodies are continuously created and recreated, and the way they are identified.
Bonneville aims to elaborate on the way we all stage ourselves and, consequently, stage our bodies, more and more through our relationship with technology – positioning the (human) body as a prosthetic meeting point between technology and social subjectivity.
Miguel Bonneville is the first in-residency artist that, shortly before his opening, brings to stage the theme of artificial intelligence and technology, and shares these questions after a pandemic period.
Bonneville has a close relation with real History characters and a very particular way of calling them into his imaginary stages.
In this piece, he is accompanied by sound artist Clothilde and by her array of instruments, very similar to an early XX century computer.
At the end of the residency there will be an informal presentation of the work and a public moment of open conversation about the object and his process.

Miguel Bonneville (Oporto, 1985) completed the courses of Performance at the Academia Contemporânea do Espectáculo (2000-03), Visual Arts at Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2006), Autobiographies, Life Stories and Artist’s Lives at CIES-ISCTE (2008), Archive – Organizing and Maintenance at Citeforma (2013), Sewing Ideas at Magestil (2013), and Cyborgs, Sex and Society at FCSH (Lisbon, 2016).
He was part of the artist’s core of the artistic structure EIRA (2004-06) and contemporary art gallery Galeria 3+1 Arte Contemporânea (2009-13).
In 2015, he was contemplated with the Ex Aequo award for his performance Medo e Feminismos – Fear and Feminisms, in collaboration with Maria Gil and with The Importance of Being Simone de Beauvoir.
Whether in performances, drawings, photographs, music and artistic books, Miguel Bonneville introduces us to autobiographical stories focused on the deconstruction and reconstruction of identity.
He presents his work in art galleries and national and international festivals, specially his projects Family Projects and Miguel Bonneville, namely in Spain, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Italy, Argentine, Brazil, USA and China.
He collaborates regularly with artists such as Carlota Lagido, David Bonneville, Sónia Baptista, Joana Linda, Joana Craveiro and Maria Gil, having also collaborated with Francisco Camacho, Teatro Praga, La Ribot, AVaspo, amongst others.
He was a resident artist at Sítio das Artes, in CAMJAP, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, 2007), at Homesession (Barcelona, 2008), at Mugatxoan in Fundação Serralves (Oporto, 2010), at Festival Transeuropa2012 (Hildesheim, 2012) and at Arts Printing House (Vilnius, 2013), Arte y Desarrollo (Madrid, 2014) and Azala (Lasierra, 2014).
Occasionally, he teaches authorial performance composition in different national and international structures.
