Scream (Gritar) is the workshop led by French choreographer, vocalist, and dancer Flora Détraz. The title leaves no room for doubt: the time and space will be dedicated to an intense exploration of the relationship between voice and movement.
Voice and body gain a new dimension, with participants challenged to step out of their comfort zones to construct narratives that break down the walls of norms and conventions.
Sound will be the raw material of this workshop, in its multiple vocalizations – from screams to breaths and laughter, from sung polyphonic voices to spoken ones.
Participants are inevitably surprised by the richness and infinite palette of their own voice, while simultaneously connecting, through it, to deeper and more ancestral layers of their body.
The notions of vibratory presence, transformation, vision, and the crossing of imaginaries take shape in this workshop, which is, in fact, a choreography of discovery guided by different performative practices.
In Scream, the French performer mirrors what has been the guiding thread of her career – the intersection between choreography, performance, and music, which has led her to create hybrid and pluridisciplinary works that explore the notions of the invisible and transformation through the dialogue between voice and body.
It is an art that overflows into social activism, in that it questions social conventions and the representations of bodies, particularly female ones.
Flora Détraz is a dancer, vocalist, and choreographer. She grew up in a family of musicians. Following training in classical dance and literary studies, she joined the program at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape, under the direction of Maguy Marin. Subsequently, she entered the choreographic studies cycle at Forum Dança in Lisbon. She trained with artists such as Vera Mantero, Lia Rodrigues, Meg Stuart, Meredith Monk, and Marlene Monteiro Freitas, among others.
She works at the intersection of choreography, performance, and music. The voice is at the center of her research. She creates hybrid and pluridisciplinary works that explore, through the dialogue between body and voice, the notions of the invisible and transformation. Her work questions social conventions and the representation of bodies, particularly female bodies. From breath to screams, from laughter to song, the bodies seek to free themselves from a rational and moral narrative to connect with deep, ancestral, and mythical layers.
As a performer, Flora Détraz has collaborated with choreographers Laurent Cèbe, Cédric Cherdel, Sara Anjo, and Marlene Monteiro Freitas.
