It is between dance and somatic practices that choreographer André Uerba moves, and that is the concept of the workshop Æffective Choreography which he leads at the Escola VA. Starting from somatic exercises, autobiographical narratives, and practices of vulnerability, he investigates the politics of intimacy and affection through the body.
The artist believes that the performing arts constitute a privileged place for encounter and, therefore, what he proposes is exactly a reflection on proximity, care, and presence as political gestures.
For André Uerba, creating a piece means creating from, through, and as a consequence of the encounter between people. Each encounter is unique, which is why this workshop takes on the form of a laboratory – a space where the conditions germinate for the performance of the same name, which will be presented on September 26th as part of the Dance, Dance, Dance Festival (Teatro das Figuras).
During the first three days, which simultaneously function as an audition – and together with Manoela Rangel, who is a performer and provides artistic assistance –, they will assess with the participants who it makes sense to have in the performance.
Using practices of consent, listening, and relationship, they investigate ways to contribute to an environment that invites vulnerability. In this context, nudity and adult language may emerge as a state, rather than an aesthetic.
The following five days are dedicated to rehearsals, in close connection with whatever emerged from the initial encounter: because the elements that will integrate the performance will come from it, and the content to be brought to the stage will be born from it. The laboratory is, therefore, more than training – it is the first act of the show.

André Uerba is a choreographer, performer, bodyworker, facilitator, and researcher. His work develops at the intersection of dance, somatic practices, and intimacy, manifesting in group performances, workshops, individual sessions, and mentorship. Holding an MA in Solo/Dance/Authorship from HZT Berlin (2015), he favors collective authorship over solo creation. In 2022, he completed his training as a Sexological Bodyworker (ISB Berlin) and the Like a Pro course by the School of Consent.
Recent works include Æffective Choreography (2022), A Hole the Size of Your Touch (2021), Pool of Emotions (2019), Fire Starter (2019), and Burn Time (2018), which have been presented in Europe, Taiwan, and Indonesia, at venues and festivals such as Radialsystem, Halle am Berghain, Verão Azul Festival, Teatro São Luiz, Transborda Festival, Serralves Museum, Tanzhaus NRW, La Caldera / Grec Festival, and Tanzbiennale Heidelberg.
In the pedagogical field, the workshops Undisguised Matter and Space Weavers stand out. In 2023, he received the Pina Bausch Fellowship, joining Diana Niepce’s program Norma as an assistant.
At the core of his practice is the desire to generate spaces and encounters that challenge dominant models of artistic consumption, extending engagement beyond institutional frameworks and into daily life.
